Examined in this article is Choi Chi-weon’s Shilla Suchang-gun Hoguk-seong Palgakdeung’ru-gi, within a context that was the Shilla society in the state’s Hadae(下代) period, as well as the Buddhist culture of the time. From this text we can see the nature of the ceremony that was held to celebrate the completion of the Palgakdeung’ru pavilion construction led by Ijae(異才), who was the Seongju(城主) lord of the Hoguk-seong fortress in the early 10<SUP>th</SUP> century.
In all the spaces inside the Hoguk-seong fortress established by Ijae in the Suchang-gun area in the year 898(2<SUP>nd</SUP> year of King Hyogong-wang’s reign), such as Buljwa(佛佐), Bulche(佛體), Cheon’wang(天王), Dalbul-seong(達佛城) and Bulsa(佛山), imbued and embedded was a strong notion of ‘protecting the country’ -aided by the love of Buddha as well as his body- that had been elaborated on in the Suvarṇa-prabhāsôttama-sūtra(Geumgwangmyeong-gyeong, 金光明經). Meanwhile, another expression(“Seven Maitreya Buddhas[七彌勒象]”) indicates influences from the Madicine Master Sutra(Yaksa-gyeong, 藥師經) which commented upon the idea of ‘a country’s defense’ benefiting from the Yaksa Buddha’s power.
Previous studies viewed the completion ceremony that was held on November 4<SUP>th</SUP>, 908(12<SUP>th</SUP> year of King Hyogong-wang’s region) as a ceremony held by the Beobsang-jong(法相宗) order, but this article suggests differently. The ceremony was joined by figures including Daedeok(大德) figures like Hongsun, Tae’yeon, Yeongdalseon, Gyeongjeokseon, and Ji’nyeom Yeonseon from the Dong’hwa-sa monastery, and Master Yungseon Jusa from the Heung’ryun-sa monastery. Considering their names and titles, rituals that were observed at the ceremony must have been Esoteric Buddhist rituals, and Sokmyeong Beondeung-beob(續命幡燈法) protocols to be exact.
