Examined in this article are literature pieces related to the Buddhist Sari within Dongmunseon(東文選, Collection of Finest writings of the East). The article’s objective is of course to study the Sari crystal belief of the Goryeo period. Some of the literature in Dongmunseon have already been examined by historians in an effort to determine how the Sari belief had changed and evolved during the Goryeo period, but a comprehensive study of all Sari-related pieces we can find in Dongmunseon has rarely been attempted. So, after examining them all this author would like to stress that Dongmunseon should be considered as an important source of information which is invaluable in even Buddhist studies, as they contain certain details regarding the Sari faith of the Goryeo period that this article would like to highlight.
In Dongmunseon, there are total of 21 articles created by 11 authors that are related to themes involving Sari. All these texts can be categorized into several groups according to the type of Sari belief displayed, which can be identified by the Sari type, how they were acquired, the nature of the sari’s miraculous power, and where they had been kept in custody.
In Goryeo, a distinction was made between Buddha’s relic[身舍利] and dharma sarira[法舍利], and miraculous stories oftentimes involved the former (also known as relic of the monks[僧舍利]) as can be seen in Dongmunseon. Meanwhile, cases of the latter are very hard to find. All people of the society–regardless of their classes- shared faith in the miraculous power of the Sari, and believed that those Sari would bring not only stronger faiths but religious accomplishments as well.
The places for preserving the Sari were usually pagodas, or sometimes places other than pagodas, and even Buddhist statues. We do not have that many pagodas from this period around today, so Dongmunseon is the perfect source to fill that void. We can also see that Sari pieces were preserved with respect in spaces other than pagodas, and the reason for keeping Sari pieces inside a Buddhist statue should be further studied with relation to the Precious Casket Seal Dharani(寶篋印陀羅尼) concept.
