Sight translation is commonly performed by professional interpreters as an interpreting assignment and increasingly practiced by interpreter trainees as well as EFL learners as a way of strengthening their oral production skills. L1 to L2 sight translation, as a form of L2 speaking task, incurs frequent occurrence of hesitation markers. The issue, however, has seldom been addressed in interpreting or hesitancy discourses. This study thus examined the frequency, location and characteristics of hesitation markers in L1 to L2 sight translation peformed by college-level EFL learners in Korea. Analyses of their sight translation transcripts revealed that unfilled pause was the most common hesitation device employed by the participants in this study. In addition, almost half of the hesitation markers produced were found to have occurred at clause-boundaries. Further investigation also unveiled the students' tendency to underuse small words as fillers. As regards uncorrected retractions, many of the repeated words turned out to be content words and nouns. The findings of this study can be used to help L2 speakers identify and improve their hesitant behaviors for more proficient oral production.
