This study analyzes the translation patterns of discourse markers in the Chinese translations of Korean novels, with a focus on the realization of translation equivalence. Among the 357 cases analyzed, discourse markers are omitted in 118 cases (33.1%) and have equivalents in 239 cases (66.9%). Of the omissions, 103 cases involve the complete removal of discourse markers, resulting in a loss of equivalence with the original text.
In cases where equivalents are present, 183 cases (51.3%) are translated as discourse markers, while 56 cases (15.7%) are rendered as non-discourse markers, with discourse marker translations being more common. Among the equivalents, 95 cases (26.6%) are derived from the same root meaning, achieving functional equivalence, whereas 86 cases (24.1%) come from different root meanings but still generally maintain equivalence.
For translations rendered as non-discourse markers, 28 cases (7.7%) involve conversions into concrete meanings, effectively conveying contextual implications but lacking discourse functions. This study highlights trends in the translation of discourse markers and examines how equivalence is achieved. It provides foundational data for further research on functional discourse marker translation and proposes alternative translation strategies.
