Jacques-Alain Miller's work on suture, inspired by Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis, was an inspiration in its part to Jean-Pierre Oudart's work about the suture in the film. The suture means basically the relation of the subject with the chain of discourse. Meanwhile, the concept of suture which appears in Oudart's text, is different from the standard version, introduced by Daniel Dayan. Oudart does not deny the suture in the sense of sealing the discourse, but Oudart's text "The Suture" is written to indicate the specific expressions in Robert Bresson's The Trial of Joan of Arc to reveal the fact of suture. Oudart's critical discovery enters into the theoretical area, by separating the Absent and the filmic subject in the process of suture. After Oudart, the concept of suture unfolded the argument about the ideology in the cinema, based on the standard understanding put forth by Dayan, while it is the discussions of Stephen Heath and Slavoj ?i?ek which show similar approaches to Oudart's. Heath made the concept of suture multiplicate, and ?i?ek related the suture to the Lacanian Reality. The conclusion of many discussions about the suture is paradoxically that the suture is impossible in the cinema, it exposes always the crack.
