Stephen Heath's Questions of Cinema, published in 1981, is basically in the flow of ideology criticism that has emerged since 1968. This Marxist film theory, which leans heavily on Althusser and Lacan, could be meaningful in criticizing the deceptive nature of classical Hollywood cinema, but its schematic and inflexible approach based on grand discourses obscures the reality of the film. Heath transformed the film experience into the problem of individual audiences rather than abstract “subject” by acknowledging the possibility of the spectator's active interpretation and revealing its importance without denying the basic proposition of ideology criticism. This transition to spectator theory, which can be evaluated as an inflection point, is related to Roland Barthes’ concept of ‘obtuse meaning’ through the analysis of 'excess' in the classical narrative, and also to Christian Metz's concept of 'textual system' by emphasizing the interpretation of the spectator.
