The ‘comfort women’ victims of the Japanese military have born traumatic scars for the rest of their lives, during which time they endured the physical pain of sterility, along with loneliness, depression and the phobias caused by social prejudice and the severance of family relationships. Their current situation not only contrasts with their representation in comfort women statues, but is also starkly different from that of the peace activists and human right activists who have denounced the war crimes committed during the Colonial period. The images represented here indicate that the post-colonial living conditions of these victims are far from smooth. This discordance between the actual living conditions and the professions of spokespersons proves that the subaltern group of victims of sexual war crimes are unvoiced. In view of this situation, it is important that we change our attention from a focus on the comfort women issues of the colonial period to those of the post-colonial era.
