The aim of this study is to analyze self-monitoring behavior among learners of Japanese language in terms of pronunciation and to clarify what they are doing. Therefore, we analyze whether and when learners hear their own pronunciation and consider it to be inaccurate, and how to self-monitor while listening to their pronunciation, as well as what kind of measures they take in response. The results show that the most inaccurate parts of their pronunciation are "long vowels," "accents," and "unnatural pronunciation." In the case of long vowels, it was shown that not only the long vowels were comprehended accurately, but also the long vowels of katakana were fully grasped. However, looking at the results of the learner"s self-monitoring, it was found that the accent and intonation could not be distinguished, and that all pitch variations were regarded as accents. Therefore, it is necessary to grasp the definition of terms accurately. Many learners heard their pronunciation and thought that there was something wrong with the pronunciation, but they couldn"t figure out why they felt it wrong or what causes the problem. Therefore, it is necessary to foster the ability to listen to one"s own pronunciation and determine the correctness in more detail and with more precision. When we analyzed what learners had been thinking during self-monitoring, we found that they paid attention to "long sound", "katakana", "sokuon", "one pronunciation", "sa line" and "za line", and "cut part." Among them, "long vowels" got the most attention from learners.
Next, in the case of katakana, it seems that students are most conscious about spelling, and when they see katakana in reading materials, they tend to speak consciously so as not to make a mistake. Finally, although "cutting part" means a pose, it was found that the most learners concentrated on self-monitoring about the pose. Based on these findings, we conclude that it is necessary to teach learners the definition of terms for speech items so that they can correctly establish the meanings of the terms in their minds. Also, since many learners think that the "cutting part" is the most important when speaking a sentence, so it is necessary to practice how to pause correctly at the same time.
