Chunhyangjeon is representative literature most known to Koreans. The representativeness of Chunhyangjeon needs to be reviewed in that there are various versions. The meaning of Chunhyangjeon, which has become national literature, cannot be fully understood only by the process of confining Chunhyangjeon to premodern literature and examining its copies and succession patterns. The colonial period is the time when various versions of Chunhyangjeon are decided as one version of YeolnyeoChunhyangsujeolga. In this study, the representative Chunhyangjeon published in the colonial period- Yi Haejo"s Ok Junghwa, Choi Namseon"s Kobon Chunhyangjeon, Yi Gwangsu"s Ilseol Chunhyangjeon, Kim Taejun"s Wonbon Chunhyangjeon (Original Chunhyangjeon), and Jo Yoonje"s Gyoju Chunhyangjeon- are analyzed diachronically. As a result, it was found that the identity of the Yeolnyeo was strengthened in Chunhyangjeon, and the scenes of the first night, which were considered vulgar, were removed. These prove there was the longing for the modernity of intellectuals in the Chunhyangjeon of the colonial period. In the colonial period, Chunhyangjeon was consumed contemporary by the masses and at the same time, defined as a classic of the past. Through the process of republishing the Chunhyangjeon and determining the original version of Chunhyangjeon, the intellectuals of the colony could embody the concept of the literary tradition as a modern one and inserted it into the genealogy of modern literature that presupposes the modern public, citizen.

‘춘향전’은 한국인들에게 가장 많이 알려진 문학 서사 중 하나이다. 하지만 다양한 이본들이 존재하고 있다는 점에서 현재 우리가 알고 있는 ‘춘향전’의 대표성은 재검토될 필요가 있다. 식민지 시기에 이르면 다양한 형태의 ‘춘향전’들이 출판사를 통해 인쇄된 활판본으로 전환되고 완판본과 경판본으로 유통되었던 이본 ‘춘향전’들이 완판본 계열의 『열녀춘향수절가』 중심으로 통일된다. 이와 같은 ‘춘향전’의 변모는 근대적인 문학제도의 구상과정과 동시적으로 일어나는 바, 본 연구에서는 통속적이고 외설적인 하층민의 문학으로 간주되었던 ‘춘향전’이 한국문학의 전통을 담은 고전문학으로 정전화 되는 과정을 탐색하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 식민지시기 발간된 대표적인 ‘춘향전’인 이해조의 『옥중화』, 최남선의 『고본 춘향전』, 이광수의 『일설춘향전』과 더불어 김태준의 『원본 춘향전』, 조윤제의 『교주 춘향전』을 통시적으로 살펴본다. 그 결과 식민지 시기의 ‘춘향전’의 발간과정에는 적층문학적인 고전 서사의 전승 방식과는 다른 근대적 문학가들의 의도적인 개입이 존재하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 식민지 시기의 ‘춘향전’은 『열녀춘향수절가』를 중심으로 서사를 통일하면서 외설적 통속성에 대한 대중의 요구를 열녀의 시련을 중심으로 재배치하였다. 그리고 기존의 ‘춘향전’이 내포하고 있는 다성적 목소리들은 열녀 춘향이라는 하나의 목소리로 축소된다. 이후 활발하게 개작, 향유되었던 대중적 서사는 확정된 근대 문학의 전통으로 계보화 된다. 이 같은 전환의 과정에는 청자의 흥미에 따라 이야기를 변용하는 광대의 의도와는 다른 근대적 작가의 열망이 내포되어 있다. 이들의 노력에 의해 현재적인 텍스트였던 ‘춘향전’은 고전의 지위를 확보한 근대문학의 정전으로 역사화된다. 하지만 독자들의 흥미를 일정한 방향으로 계도 하려는 근대적 지식인들의 시도에도 불구하고 근대화된 ‘춘향전’에는 여전히 복합적인 대중의 욕망과 상반되는 주제 의식이 혼재되어 있다. 이러한 갈등의 지점은 고전 ‘춘향전’의 의미뿐만 아니라 사라진 이본 ‘춘향전’들의 의미를 재발견할 수 있게 해줄 것이다.
