The posthumous title(Shiho, 諡號) of king is the posthumous name dedicated by the successor. The Goryeo Dynasty distinguished between the Shirine title(Myoho, 廟號) and posthumous title and established an independent system that making the posthumous title. The Goryeo Dynasty selected the posthumous title according to the rules from the beginning and dedicated the posthumous title to the former king after going through a regular procedure. Even though they decided Shiho based on rule, It was necessary for selecting Shiho to go through agreement. Thus, the political relationship of the age were naturally reflected in the process of choosing Shiho. We can confirm the fact that Goryoe people use Shiho as a tool to worship the King Taejo, and jutify king’s authority by searching the meaning of Shiho’s letter in early Goryoe Dynasty.
One of the most important shiho is filial duty(hyo, 孝). The Han Empire put the letter of hyo in Siho to premanently possess the dynasty by imprinting the emperor’s image of take the initiative and set an example in filial behavior. It was same in Goryeo Dynasty. As showing off blood-related, moral legitimacy of the former king, Goryeo Dynasty utilized the hyo Shiho to make public justification of Succession King.
