Since Auschwitz, Paul Celan has become a prominent poet in using symbols of Christianity, especially Jesus on the cross, to create the space for a poetic dialogue. “Tenebrae,” which refers to the darkness at the time of Jesus’ death, works as the space that enables solidarity with all the dead. Celan recalls the Lord who is asked to pray for humans, which sounds highly blasphemous.
Understanding “Tenebrae” from a Christian point of view, Gadamer considers the “lord” that Celan speaks of the God who shares loneliness and thorough solitude of all humans who stand alone before death. All humans are helpless before death. The God who has not suffered death cannot understand the utter fears and despair of the humans who stand before death. Celan"s “Lord,” as understood by Gadamer, is so thoroughly helpless before death that he cannot save humans; yet, he is the “Lord” who shares experiences with all the dead through his death.
Scholars like Sholem, in contrast, understand “Tenebrae” from the perspective of Jewish mysticism. Revelation evokes a revolution. The Messiah, who will bring salvation, however, has not yet come; and his strength is weak. The “Lord” in “Tenebrae” is still a weak messiah.
In following Meister Eckhart"s tradition, one can understand “Tenebrae” in terms of Christian mysticism. Eckhart maintains that anyone can be the only the Son. Divinity cannot be expressed in words. In Christian mysticism, silence is more important than words. Christian divinity abandons the presence and seeks eternity. Celan"s “Lord” in “Tenebrae” is, however, the god abandoned in history, instead of becoming the eternity.
Celan depicts God as the one who ignores the human suffering in adopting symbols of the cross and the sacrament. God stands far away; yet, all the abandoned, including the dead, are willing to participate in their suffering in their blood . What is important is that Celan recalls several Jewish and Christian traditions in “Tenebrae.” Those who have read his poems have an opportunity to look back on themselves and to listen to the others. In this sense, Celan"s “Tenebrae” is as dialogic as his other poems.
