Much Ado about Nothing is an insightful story that explores the frailty and fallibility of the human mind when exposed to external intervention. It is not just an entertaining comedy but a journey into the psyche of our minds and reminds us just how vulnerable human beings are to external intervention and outward appearances. In the Renaissance period, external interventions were launched on target subjects via gulling in the form of spectatorship or the act of “noting.” Interpretations of what they overhear vary based on the innate character and psychology of the individual, and consequences oscillate between a happy ending and a tragic ending. Especially in the confines of the most intimate and personal feeling, love, external intervention can take a toll on a person’s mind and actions. Much Ado about Nothing imputes the end results of external intervention to the differences in psychological states of the characters, Benedick, Beatrice, and Claudio. In the case of Benedick and Beatrice, Don Pedro masterminds a ruse that is commensurate with their narcissistic and proud but at the same time compassionate and warm-hearted traits. Eventually faith, compassion and empathy for the other person redeem knavery and they are gulled into loving each other. On the other hand, the outcome of external intervention to Claudio is diametrically opposite; he falls prey to a more malevolent gulling scheme by Don John, and due to lack of faith in humanity and compassion, Claudio jumps to myopic conclusions injudiciously.
