Evangelicalism arose from the theological heritage of the 16<SUP>th</SUP> Century Reformation. During the 19th Century, Evangelicalism experienced remarkable growth, while at the same time facing challenges from scientific thinking, rationalism and the liberal theology. What the movement faced in the 20th Century was very different from what they faced in the 19th Century, full of confidence. Against this backdrop, the leaders of various denominations who professed ‘evangelical faith’ gathered together to organise a proper response and, as a result, WEA was formed. WEA was born in the midst of the challenge that was posed by Liberal Theology, which was based on modernism, and the decline of the influence of Christianity.
WEA, as its name suggests, is an alliance of many denominations and groups working together. WEA is a ministry alliance, not a doctrinal alliance. WEA rejects fundamentalistic anti-culturalism and separatism and seeks to go into the world to practice the Gospel.
Some people are concerned about WEA"s attempts at solidarity. Although WEA do not seek the unification of the Church, WEA"s openess to the WCC and Catholics is problematic. Such openness has been interpreted as doctrinal inclusiveness by those critical of WEA. The issue of identity is an important issue that cannot be neglected in attempts at solidarity. In this regard, WEA needs to be clear about how they go about establishing relationships with WCC and Catholics in the future. It should be noted that hasty solidarity can be bad solidarity. Despite these concerns, it is historically significant that WEA"s attempt to go into the world and practice the gospel in solidarity in the context of the decline of the influence of Christianity and the challenge of modernism.
