The theology of the World Evangelical Alliance (the “WEA”) is generally sound. It is largely consistent with the Lausanne Movement’s covenant “requiring the whole Church to take the whole gospel to the whole world.” The WEA was founded on biblical principles, and its ministry is biblically based. It follows the theological traditions of Calvin and Abraham Kuyper. Inter-church cooperation should not be confused with inter-church mixing. We should keep in mind the maxims that the Puritans adopted as their motto: “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity” and cooperate accordingly. The WEA can be an ally as 1) a theological companion that agrees to what is essential, 2) a ministry partner for common missional tasks, and 3) a collaborator in working towards a healthy society and world peace. The Church should examine its theological purpose. The Church is the only instrument that God has established to restore the world. It is the glorious body of Christ. Sadly, however, many churches in the world are shabby and weak. Nevertheless, God intends to restore the nations through the Church. The theology of the Church, then, should be focused on restoring the mission of the Church, filling the Church, and to building up the Kingdom of God.
The global Church looks to the Korean Church, in anticipation, for it to act and respond appropriately. In particular, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Korea has a greater responsibility. If you listen carefully, you will hear the Macedonian Call asking that we help. Even if only for the sake of our mission, we should more actively seek cooperation. We must unite, not with the Korean Church but with Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God at our center. The enemy we must fight against is not other churches, but the trinity of evil. Our enemy is the devil who prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. The church must fight against the world’s nihilism, humanism, scientism, false religions, and all sorts of ideologies that oppose the Kingdom of God. The churches on earth are our companions fighting together on the spiritual battlefield. We should value them and cooperate with them. Because we are forgetting about spiritual warfare, we may want to fight with other churches. But we must gather our strengths together to build up the church. We value the pure passion for the gospel of those who criticize the WEA. However, the pure passion of these critics can tear, bleed, and harm Christ’s body, the Church. If they have good intentions, they should also consider whether the results are good as well. The Korean Church has the power to lead the global Church. We must bear this missional responsibility for the global Church.
