Surabyeo is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from a backcrossed combination between the F1 of Suweon 345/Kanto PL4 and Suweon 345 of lodging tolerant, semi-dwarf, high-quality rice line by the rice breeding team of National Croping at the central plain and middle land areas in Korea. It is resistant to lodging with short-statured plant height. The milled rice ofSurabyeo shows translucence, considerably clear non-glutinous endosperm and short grain. It has about 18.3% of amylose content,low gelatinization temperature and good palatability of cooked rice compared with Hwaseongbyeo. This cultivar is less sensitive topike-let sterility at cold-water irrigated nursery compared with those of Hwaseongbyeo in Chuncheon. It has slow leaf senescence andconsiderable tolerance to viviparous germination during the ripening stage. Also, it shows resistance or moderate resistance to bac-terial blight, leaf blast and stripe virus, but susceptibility to dwarf and black-streaked dwarf virus and insect pest. The yield per-scultivar would be highly adaptable to central plain and middle land areas of Korea.
