Saechucheongbyeo is a new japonica multiline for blast resistance, which was composed of equal proportions in seedweight of three near-isogenic lines of two combinations. The recurrent parent, Chucheongbyeo, was a high-quality rice cultivarwith susceptibility to leaf blast. The blast-resistance donors were Bonggwangbyeo and Daeseongbyeo. This cultivar has aboutcmin culm length and has moderate tolerance to lodging. It has relatively semi-erect pubescent leaf blade and slightly thin culm toslightly narrow leaf width. Saechucheongbyeo has a few more number of tillers per hill and similar number of spikelets per paniclecompared with those of Hwaseongbyeo. It shows less sensitivity to premature heading in late transplanted test by 70-day old seed-erytest at Chuncheon. This cultivar shows slow leaf senescence and considerable tolerance to viviparous germination during the rip-ening stage. It shows moderate resistance to leaf blast, but susceptible to bacterial blight, stripe virus, and insect pests. The milledrice of Saechucheongbyeo is translucent and clear. Its endosperm is non-glutinous and the grain is small and bold type. It showslower amylose content (19.7%) and similar gelatinization temperature and good palatability of cooked rice compared with3year period. This cultivar would be highly adaptable to the central low land of Korea.
