“Sangmibyeo” is a japonica rice cultivar developed from a cross between Sambaegbyeo and Ou 316 by Sangju Substation of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station, R.D.A. in 1998. The cultivar is early maturing with heading date of August 7 in ordinary season. It has erect plant type and lodging tolerance with short culm of 66 cm. Milled rice of this variety has translucent, clear nonglutinous endosperm and medium size grain and its palatability of cooked rice is very excellent. It is moderately resistant to leaf blast, but susceptible to bacterial blight, virus diseases and major insect pests. The yield performance of “Sangmibyeo” is about 5.31 ton/ha in milled rice at standard fertilizer level of three-years local adaptability test, which was about 3 percent higher than Odaebyeo. It would be highly adaptable to the middle and southern inland and mid-mountainous area of Korea.
