The purpose of this study is inquiring the aspects of attitude expression in foreign student's report writing and proposing the necessity of emphasis on attitude expression in teaching academic writing for foreign students. In academic writing, authors eager to maintain the objectivity with various devices even though when they express their own opinion. These efforts bring the effects of enhancing audience's confidence toward the author's opinion. However, it seems that foreign students have poor recognition about these specific way in expressing author's attitude. Author's attitude in academic texts can be divided into the attitude toward contents and the attitude toward audience. The attitude toward contents is operationally categorized into 'logical reasoning', 'clear description for object' and 'refined expression about their own evaluation and judgement', and the attitude toward audience is categorized into 'hidden author', 'hidden audiences'. 45 report writing texts from foreign students were analysed with these items. As a results, there were lots of errors in author's attitude that cannot be explained by syntactic or discourse organizational facet. These results can propose the necessity of teaching on attitude expression in academic writing, and the category used in this study can be useful content item in teaching.
