This study aims at investigating the effect of one-on-one conferences between the teacher and students on the writing content. The purpose of the study is to explore (i) how many and what types of discourse occur in the conference, (ii) whether or not the content of writing is improved after conferences, (iii) what types of discourse is correlated to the writing improvement. Six junior students, majoring Korean language in a university in China, participated in the experiment. The teacher who had conferences is a lecturer at the same university with 10 years of teaching experience. Also three other teachers participated to evaluate students’ writing. Both group of students were asked to write two writings. Experimental group students wrote writing 1, and had conference twice, then revised writing 1after each conference, finally wrote writing 2. Control group students wrote writing 1 and wrote writing 2 after three weeks of self-correction. The drafts of writing 1 and writing 2 were evaluated by three teachers. The results showed that the conferences really affect the improvement of students' writing content, and increase students' awareness of writing content. Students who initiated and directed the conversation produced better writing content than students who simply listened to the teacher and participated conversation passively.
