This study investigated the developmental trends of elementary students' reading attitude. Especially, it examined how children's grade and gender have an influence on their attitude toward reading. For it, 1874 first-to-sixth elementary schoolers were participated in the study and Korean Elementary Reading Attitude Survey(KERAS) was used for the data collection.
Results from the study document a negative trend in elementary students' attitude toward reading as they pass through the elementary grade. After fourth grade, especially, their attitude has a tendency to significantly drop. Regarding gender effect on reading attitude, results indicate that girls as a group possess more positive attitude than boys at all grade levels. Since third grade, furthermore, a gap between boys and girls in reading attitude is growing bigger.
Implication for reading or Korean language educators seem clear. Early intervention in an effort to preempt reading difficulties and to provide better reading instruction, reading environment, and time to read may curb the attitude decline. Also, further study should be performed to investigate whether children's reading achievement and reading instruction affect their attitude toward reading.
