The purpose of this study was to investigate preservice secondary biology teachers' understanding of biotechnology. Most preservice teachers have heard about biotechnology and they have high recognition about usefulness rather than danger of biotechnology such as genetically modified food, genetically modified animal for medical treatment, genetic test, gene therapy, etc. They have relatively lower understanding about genetic test that have caused social controversy recently than other topics. There are various responses about the use of biotechnology such as genetic test, gene manipulation and gene database that may cause social and ethical problems. They agreed with the use of genetic information for searching for a missing child and criminal genetic database and disagreed with the use for health insurance, employment, genetic test before the marriage, etc. The fact that most of them have access to the knowledge and information of biotechnology through TV, university education and newspaper gives great consequence to education and mass media. There are meaningful differences between some understandings of students according as they took a course related to biotechnology or not. This results show that university education might be effective in increasing understanding of biotechnology and provide a rational for the inclusion of biotechnology in the biology curriculum for raising biology teacher in university.
