This research aims to reveal research trends in biology education in Korea based on an analysis of 680 publications in the Korean Journal of Biology Education from the 1st issue to the current 99th issue. The change in research trends from 1968 to 2010 projected not only the cumulated outputs of the research efforts but also the research environments for biology education, such as the production of scholars according to the establishment of Ph. D. programs in universities and the supporting role of the Korean Journal of Biology Education. The results of the analysis of publications in the periodicals indicated that the number of articles has been increasing and research scope in terms of research types, methods, topics, and subjects has extended over the years. In particular, changes in research methods, from the quantitative to the qualitative approach, were explored with the diversification of research topics. This change was intertwined with the increasing pool of biology education researchers and the strengthening of attempts to publish articles in the Korean Journal of Biology Education. The implications of analyzing research trends in biology education in Korea will be discussed.
