Subjects of this study were elementary 6th graders who had learned the unit of 'movement and regulations of human body' in 5th grade science, and their understanding levels and misconceptions of the structure and the functions of sensory organs, nervous system, skeletal and muscle systems in human body were examined.A questionnaire consisted of multiple choice items and the reason of the choice was developed and administered to the subjects, then the responses were analyzed for students' understanding level with their gender and the residential regions.The results of this study are as follows:1. The proportion of correct answers about 'movement and regulations of human body' was 60.43%, showing the middle understanding level.2. The subjects' understanding levels and types of misconceptions were not significantly different between gender and between residential regions.3. Elementary students held the misconceptions associated with their daily experiences in the unit of 'movement and regulations of human body'. Especially, the responses to items on division of body part, the smelling principle, constitution of central nervous system, and the roles of cartilage and synovia on linkage of bones had revealed a various misconceptions.In this study, it is thought that the elementary students do not have enough understanding on the structures and functions of organ which are undertaken 'movements and regulations of human body'. Therefore, further studies to elucidate the causes of formation of elementary students' misconceptions and to correct them are required.
