The concept of evolution is an important concept which construct and unifies various biological concepts. The aim of this research was to analyze the middle and high school students' misconception pattern and cause of each misconception about evolution. In order to analyze the evolution misconception patterns, the test was applied to 252 students. Some students were interviewed to find the cause of each misconception. As a result, the misconceptions on evolution could be classified into five thought patterns such as environment adaptedness thought, teleological thought, Larmarckian thought, destined directional thought and creationism thought. The students having environment adaptedness thought could not fully understand the Darwinian concept of “adaptation of fittest". They thought that living organisms actively evolved. The students having misconception patterns of teleological thought and environment adaptedness thought showed that they have misconceptions about variation and mutation. Students who had the pattern of Larmarckian thought didn’t understand the inheritance of parental characteristics through generative cells. The students who had destined directional thinking, didn’t understand inheritance patterns related to dorminance, recessive, and mutation. Some of the misconception patterns including environment adaptedness thought, Larmarckian thought, destined directional thought and creationism thought, are gradually reduced as the students move up to higher grades. However there is a tendency for higher grades to have more strong teleological misconception.
