The purposes of this study are: 1) to investigate students' preferences for different types of online courses, content and activities in a cyber university; 2) to examine students' attitudes towards the courses and content and 3) to suggest a desirable way to develop effective online courses and content. A quantitative research method was adopted, i.e., questionnaires and interviews were used to collect the data. The results of this study present that the majority of students prefer the courses which combine the lecture with the multimedia content. In the speaking and listening courses, students prefer authentic movies and animation, in the composition courses they prefer guided writing with immediate feedback, and in the theory and introductory courses they prefer professor's lectures. In general, students' attitudes towards online courses and content were very positive without significant differences between grades and gender. However, their attitudes towards interaction between learners were relatively negative. When developing online courses and contents, therefore, teachers and designers might benefit from a careful consideration of these results.
