This paper analyzes style shift mechanisms used by a former learner (HT) of Japanese Language. The objectof analysis is modality expressions such as supposition and request for confirmation. Speech data were collectedthrough a longitudinal survey totalizing 12 recordings since HT’s acquisition step. The last survey was carriedout ten years after HT returned to Korea, during the language maintenance period. HT uses “yone”, a modality form to confirmation request, in formal situations and Kansai’s regional dialectform “yaro” and “jan”(janaika) in informal situations. During the language maintenance period, three types ofstyle shift were observed: the omission or the use of “teineigo” in “janaika” and “janaidesuka” and the shiftbetween “daro” and “desho”; the use or the omission of “yone”. The analysis allowed us to conclude that some interlanguage features were observed in HT’s data such asstability, backsliding and systematicity.
