In the poems of Wisława Szymborska, a world-renowned Polish poet and Nobel prize laureate, many figurative motifs can be found. She quotes directly from different types of fine arts of the orient and the occident, ranging from medieval miniatures, Renaissance paintings and Flemish paintings to the Japanese engravings that had a great influence on the western impressionism. She also borrows subjects, images, feeling, and techniques of expression from the fine arts. In Szymborska's poems, the interaction between literature and fine arts occurs in three aspects. Firstly, much of her work is inspired by visual art. Secondly, the visual images created by shapes and colors work as a medium to help her to recall lost memories of the past. Thirdly, artworks appear in her poems as a paradox which goes against the stream of time. The figurative motifs in the poems of Szymborska are not only closely related to the basic structure of the poems, but also interact with the subjects of the poems. The ultimate aim of this study is to attempt an interdisciplinary study between literature and fine arts that goes beyond the scope of comparative literature.
