Poetry picture book is the new media form where a poem and pictures build meaning together. This study analyzed one of the poetry picture books to trace the process the illustrator, Kim Yong-Cheol, went through in transforming the poem, 'A half moon in the day time' written by a poet, Yun Seok-Jung, into several pictures.
Transforming a poem into pictures needs an accurate interpretation and a fine appreciation of the poem. The analysis could point a direction that we need to take to make students improve their ability to interpretate poem and express their appreciation of it.
To transform the poem into pictures, readers need to decide which images to choose for pictures. They create images using their imagination while reading a poem, and the images diver in shape and color etc. because their experience is diverse and different. Each reader should decide which image to choose from the images to transform the poem into pictures.
Readers also need to make a decision which style of art to pick for painting, that would realize the mood of the poem. In changing the poem written by language into pictures painted by lines and colors, they need to understand how they can realize the mood of the poem by using lines and colors. This activity could invite students to understand and appreciate the poem more deeply.
