This study aims to concretely investigate the characteristics and values of Korean sea poems in accordance with their types.
The structural types of sea poems can be classified into four categories as follows: didactic poems, emotional poems, aesthetic poems, and the sea poems of life.
Didactic poems, the first type, provide the social lesson and the chances of personal awakening through the description of sea. They have offered the appropriateness of change and the courage of renewal at every historical turning point since the 1945 Liberation of Korea.
Meanwhile, Korean sea poems neither express a sense of national resentment nor show a sense of social wrath in the period of Japanese occupation by force. Emotional sea poems show poet's personal sentiment or the joy of sailing, but they have increasingly represented more personal torture and wrath since the 1945 Liberation of Korea.
Aesthetic sea poems are characterized by the delicate depiction of sea through poet's imagination, the overuse of foreign words or phrases, modernistic techniques and an exotic atmosphere. Actually, since the 1945 Liberation of Korea, sea has become a main subject matter of fantasy poems on the basis of dadaism and surrealism.
Sea has significance as the scene of life. The sea poems of life reflect the actual life of sailors and fishermen frankly. The stronger the national competitive power grows, the worse the tragedy of life in sea poems makes, and it is believed that this results from the improvement of human rights as well as the exhaustion of sea resources and a failure of policy. In addition, the sea poems of life recently reveal realistically the scene of severe ecological destruction and historical contradiction, and this will be believed to continue for quite a long time.
The above-mentioned four types of sea poems not only systematize the characteristics of Korean sea poem, but help aware the distinction between sea poems and poems of other substances. Moreover, it is proved in the process of research that sea poems have male complex. It is generalized that female complex is regarded as one of the characteristics in Korean modern poems. However, female narrators rarely can be seen in sea poems. Even in the poem of personal grief, male tone never disappears. It is believed that there is a cultural convention by which sea is considered the forbidden space to women in the male-oriented society.
