A Study on the Poetry of Wisława Szymborska and the Awareness of Existence through 'Naught' found in Laotse and Changtsu's Philosophy Choi Sung Eun In the poetry of Wislawa Szymborska, a laureate of the Nobel Literature Award in 1966 and a representative Polish poet, the concept of ‘naught’ appears often. But this doesn't mean simple 'nothingness'. Szymborska's ‘naught’ is 'a useful naught' that conceives living functions and is ‘a negative for positive’. As with Laotse and Changtsu, Szymborska focuses on the animated and endless movement in 'naught'. As she emphasizes that it is the movement of ‘naught’ that gives unlimited force for driving life, existence, and the universe, she sings of creating 'something' from 'nothing'. From the point that she captures a positive dimension that abundantly embraces the possibility of existence, 'naught' of Szymborska and Laotse-Changtsu philosophy share a similarity. This paper analyzes the poems of Wisława Szymborska through the "Laotse-Changtsu philosophy", which is East Asia's representative philosophy as well as a psychological mode universal to mankind. In Szymborska's poetry and the philosophy of Laotse-Changtsu, ‘the logic of paradox' frequently appear. Also, they mobilize a variety of negative diction and irony to express ‘what can't be expressed in words.’ The fact that she boldly rejects dualistic division and justice caught in a polarized framework is also considered to have a thread of connection with Laotse-Changtsu philosophy.
