An Essay on Communication between Narrative Theories and Reading EducationKim Sung-JinThe present study examined communication between reading education and literature education. In particular, we considered how narrative theories can be grafted into the area of nonliterature reading. Recent plot theories emphasize the aspect of ‘schemes’ or ‘strategies’ for realizing the author’s dynamic desires inherent in stories. Moreover, in records oriented to historical facts as well, we can find plots that organize happenings into a story. The present paper utilized such an extended concept of plot. As a consequence, we discovered the logic of ‘colonialism’ inherent in Isabella Bird Bishop’s Korea and Her Neighbors. Based on discussion above, the contents of critical reading education could be materialized further. These days, ‘fairness’ is suggested as an important external reference in critical reading. Connecting this to plot, we can summarize, “Critical reading is to understand inner logic that gives unity to the author’s various experiences.” Criticism theories including the plot theory can be helpful in discussion on reading in the manner of social constructivism in the sense that they structured ‘social and cultural contexts’ into the form of knowledge.
