This study aimed to investigate specific aspects and actual conditions of ecologism applied to the research of Korean language education. Through this, it intended to examine in which situations the words “ecological” and “ecologism” are used within Korean language education and the concept and category in such case. The paper is expected to provide base data for finding relationships between Korean language education and an ecological perspective or ecologism and specific directions.
Previous studies on the “ecological perspective” can be divided into mainly four areas. Firstly, there was a study that regarded Korean language education as an ecosystem and attempted to expand the scope of Korean language education to include the environment outside the classroom and parents. There was a study that attempted to extend the concept of “the ability to use Korean language” from a functional-oriented concept that excludes situational context, and there was a study that intended to reflect the needs of the times by reconceptualizing the ability to use Korean language. Also, looking at the ecological perspective in respect of Korean language education, it provided a basis for integration in the process of dividing areas of Korean language education and convergence with other subjects, and ecologism served as a foundation for changes in evaluation theory for improving Korean language education evaluation in a more practical and genuine direction focused on students" growth and development. Also, the ecological perspective had an impact on defining the identity of Korean language education and its relationship with other subjects in the process of finding the academic identity of Korean language education.
Through this, it was possible to know how the ecological perspective or ecologism is understood in Korean language education. Also, Korean language educationalists should broaden their understanding of ecologism, and there was a need to quantitatively increase research on various aspects of Korean language education.
