As evidenced by the literature and archaeological data, the Iksan area occupies a very significant place in the history and culture of Mahan and Baekje. From the religious and cultural viewpoint, Mireuksa Temple in Iksan was founded as a Buddhist temple called Wanghungsa with an aim to revive Baekje and to comfort the mind of the people having been distracted since King Seong, according to a historical book. Mireuksa Temple, particularly, was a national temple which embraced the wish of the Baekje people to embody the world of Yonghwa in this area by practicing the faith of Maitreya’s advent as recorded in the chronicle of the temple foundation. In addition, it is presumed that the royal capital was transferred here around the end of Baekje Kingdom on the ground that royal palace, memorial facilities for ancestors, tombs for royal family, etc. which all were the essential requirements for a capital city in the ancient countries were constructed. The Korean society during the later period of the old Korean Empire became the battleground of the Western powers in the vortex of great confusions and conflicts. In response to the request of the times to overcome such conditions, Jeungsan-gyo and Won-Buddism came on stage as the representative new religions that were connected with Maitreya faith. The appearance on the scene of these new religions can be seen as an unbroken succession of Maitreya faith. The ideology of Maitreya Yonghwa-Hoesang suggested by the Grand Master Sotaesan Park Jungbin (少太山 朴重彬, 1891~1943), founder of Won-Buddism, was based on the world view of equality which everybody can access to but is characteristically different to a great degree from the hero-centered world view of Maitreya. It may be thus said that the Headquarters of Won-Buddism is seated in Iksan as the holy place for preaching since it is originated from the faith of Maitreya’s advent that is further connected with Mireuksa Temple of Baekje. In the Baekje era, this temple was built here for political purposes of the elite political power including the royal authority, whereas Sotaesan chose Iksan as the mecca or the holy place for preaching the faith of Won-Buddism worldwide.
