Report Errors

This study noted that the beneficial service and Bodhisattva"s actions of Buddhist monk Taegong Wolju were established through his unique thought of Maitreya. Wolju became a monk at Beopjusa Temple, a temple that believes in Maitreya Buddha, and lived at Geumsansa Temple all his life.
His interpretation of Maitreya is so original that it is comparable to Wonhyo"s the Annotations of Sutra on ascent of Maitreya. The core of his Maitreya thought was to emphasize that before Maitreya rescued the people, all the people should become the incarnation of Maitreya and first do ten good deeds to turn the world into a Maitreya Pure Land. In other words, the passive Maitreya faith was newly interpreted as active Bodhisattva behavior. His interpretation of Jinpyo preceptor also showed a perspective that values Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in the same way as Maitreya, unlike the previous one.
He had a negative view of the ideas of the Great open and the Messiah because he thought it might create fake Maitreya and deceive the public. So he campaigned to understand the Maitreya faith correctly and emphasized the original Maitreya faith of Buddhism.
Wolju"s Maitreya thought served as the driving force for his practice of Samantabhadra, and became the basis for the socialization movement of enlightenment, the second renunciant to the world, and the global community symbiosis.
It can be seen that his original and active Maitreya thought that he should actively practice ten good deeds and create Maitreya Pure Land together was supported in the spirit of Taegong Wolju"s Beneficial service, a living witness to modernization, popularization, and socialization of Korean Buddhism.
