J. Althusius comes to be known recently as the father of federalism and subsidiarity. His political theories have revived in late twentieth century after being overshadowed by the statist theories of J. Bodin and T. Hobbes for four hundred years. His thoughts on the consociation, societal federalism, local representation, subsidiarity, and shared-sovereignty are more appropriate concepts in overly centralized states in these day than the beginning of seventeen century. From this perspective this paper overviews his life and summarizes his political theories. And then this paper compares Althusius with Bodin and Hobbes and concludes that the former"s theories are more appropriate for amending the highly centralized government structure in modern constitutions. Based on the Althusius theory this paper lists some points for the revision of the Korean Constitution which is in progress these days.
