Richard III dramatized the theatricality of political power. During the reign of Elizabeth I, the theatricality of power was practiced by the court, and the political power of a monarch was considered theatrical. Queen Elizabeth I was a monarch who knew the importance of creating a positive image and tried to appropriate the images of the political situation of England.
Theatricality is an indispensable element in the process of creating images and appropriating images. Shakespeare, in his political drama Richard III, not only reflects the theatricality of political power but also the power of this theatricality. In particular, theatricality is manipulated and appropriated by Richard, a villain who usurps the English throne. This paper examines how theatricality is manipulated by Richard and how it is used to attain and enforce his political power.
