This paper explores Richard’s psychopathic traits and lack of empathy in Shakespeare’s Richard III through reference to modern brain science. In the opening scene, Richard determines to be a villain, using his deformed body to justify his malice, as he unscrupulously plans his wrongdoings to take the throne. His psychological traits?namely his antisocial behavior, bold and guiltless attitude, lack of empathy for the suffering of others, and his insecure attachment bonding due to parental inadequacy?are similar to those exhibited by psychopaths with poorly functioning frontal lobes, involved in emotion. Without the benefit of modern-day technologies?such as CT, EEG, PET, SPECT, and fMRI brain scanning?Shakespeare provides us with an almost exact description of the clinical features of psychopaths as defined by present-day brain imaging. Like modern brain scientists, Shakespeare understands and explains human action involved in brain function, which suggests that literature and brain science can meet.
