This paper argues the role of the wrestling scene in As You Like It is more than metaphoric but rather posits a historically topical and politically controversial issues of the particular sports game; wrestling. Wrestling was a big part of traditional festival, but the coexistence of festive and violent nature of wrestling asks social leaders to consider the need to control its level of violence and to regulate people’s leisure time while keeping its festive spirit. On the other hand, wrestling was an encouraged bodily exercise on a national level fundamentally aiming to support strong masculinity that would serve for military force called up in time of war. However, the open opportunity to participate in the game for all sorts of people also generated social fear that the fair competition could blur or annihilate the class distinction. Although it is just “illusion” of social equality, it surely seemed too risky to publicly imbue the fantasy that anyone could cross the established class barrier in wrestling place. With all those concerns and controversies in mind, the wrestling match between Orlando, a gentleman by birth, and Charles, a professional wrestling player in Act 1 of As You Like It, creates the theatrical moment of fair competition between different social classes, violently overpowering the stronger, not socially or physically but spiritually or theatrically. When a play presents a sports game, the scene creates a meta-dramatic moment of play-within-a-play, transforming its audience into spectators betting on the winner, helping their understanding of rivalry created between the characters, and reversely encouraging them to interpret the game as a drama plotted through exposition and denouement featuring climax. The scene depicts Orlando’s first step to be cultivated toward social elite but also exposes the illusion of fair play and theatrical frame of the sport competition.
