This study investigated case marker acquisition of L2 Korean learners under the assumption that there would be typological characteristics of case markers on the developmental stages. The participants in this study were 24 American, 45 Chinese, and 41 Japanese college-level learners at an intermediate proficiency level of Korean. For data collection, the participants’ were asked to write to explain the story of the mime movie ‘Mr. Bean,’ and their writings were analyzed to calculate the output frequency and error rate of each case marker. According to the data analysis of frequency and error rates of case markers, this study indicated that (ⅰ) L2 learners’ production of case markers followed Blake’s case hierarchy (1994) except locative, allative, and dative; however, in terms of error rates, the findings did not support Blake’s case hierarchy; (ⅱ) L2 learners from caseless language (Chinese) and case-inflected language (American) committed more omission errors than L2 learners from case language (Japanese); and (ⅲ) L2 learners from neutral language (Chinese) committed more substitution errors of nominative and accusative markers than L2 learners from accusative languages (English and Japanese).
