In this paper, we wish to study howthe native Japanese speakers and Korean students who study the Japanese shift the topic of their conversation in the first meeting, and examine it in terms of its usage patterns and types. The main tasks are as follows. First, we identify the topic shifting in the discourse corpus and analyze the degree of its occurrences. Second, we classify the observed topic shifting by type and identify their tendency to use different types of topic shifting.
The results of the analysis highlighted that the occurrences of topic shifting were observed in 11% of the native Japanese speakers and 16% of the Korean students. In terms of the observed topic shifting by type, for the former it appeared in the order of "shading", "introduction", and "assumption-presentation", while for the latter, it appeared in the order of "introduction", "shading", and "reintroduction". It was observed that there was a difference in the types of topic shifting between the native Japanese speakers and the Korean students.
