The main purpose of this article is to arrange the previous scholarly accomplishments of the Battle of Myeongryang(鳴梁) and to provide some productive prospects. The studies on this famous battle began to gain momentum since the paper that dealt with this subject fully in the 1980s. Since then, many facts have been revealed such as substatial understanding of naval strategies of both Joseon and Japan, fighting strength of both sides engaged in sea battle, and the critical use of currents in Myeongryang. Also, reasonable alternative to underwater iron-chain theory and fresh perspectives on the actual battle spot have been suggested, so as to elevate the quality of related researches higher. Such movement has contributed to the sophisticated theories of victory factors by the Korean navy and also to revitalize studies based on various methodology.
However, despite mentioned progresses, there are still some questions to be answered, the biggest of which is the conflicting opinions on the battle spot. Two theories are paralleling divided into ‘sea off the coast of Right Naval District(右水營)’ and ‘formation with Yangdo(羊島) island as the forefront’. Iron-chain theory has already been proven to be obsolete, but recently this theory is resurfacing without any concrete verificaton. An approach in relatons to Joseon-era Maritime Defense Systems of the naval districts could be one of the options in overcoming this dilemma. Also, certain complementation is needed in terms of battle point in time and kinds of Japanese warships participated through wide discussions.
Meanwhile, macroscopic studies on how Myeongryang battle has affected the course of the war from a historical perspective of warfare are also essential. Previous researches have given the general understanding of the subject, but military point of view should be added in respect to generating bigger picture of how this battle has influenced military strategies of both sides and how it changed the situations of the entire Jungyoo War(丁酉再亂). Only by then could the comprehensive status of the Battle of Myeongryang in the Hideyoshi Invasion of Korea be ascertained.
