Gadeok-do (do = island) is the easternmost island of Gyeongsang-U-do, and borders Gyeongsang-Jwa-do along with the Nakdong river. Historically, Gadeok island has served as a strategic choke-point, through which invading Japanese naval forces approaching the Korean peninsula must contend. In the 16th century during the Joseon dynasty, Japanese invasions became severe, leading to the Imjin war and in 1544 Gadeok-jin and Cheonseong-jin (jin = fortification) were installed and operated as Naval fortresses in this area to defend against Japanese invasions. When the Imjin war broke out, Gadeok-do was the first to recognize the fact of the war and performed the function of front-line communication. In the wake of the Imjin war, Gadeok island was a central destination for the Joseon naval forces' activities, and was located on the waterway connecting Jeolla-do-Gyeongsang-do-(Gadeok-do)-Busan. Therefore, Gadeok island had an important status as the main target area for the Joseon naval forces' activities. In this paper, the activities of the Joseon navy, centered on Gadeok island, are divided into the early period of the Imjin war, the Ganghwa (truce) period, and the Jeongyujaeran period (second Imjin war). In the early days of the Imjin war, Gadeok-do Bongsudae (signal fire) was the first to announce the outbreak of the Japanese invasion. In addition, it was selected as a target for the Joseon naval forces' four battles and became the background for numerous naval battles. In particular, for the victory of the Busanpo naval battle, the last naval battle in Imjin year, the Joseon naval forces were stationed on Gadeok island for three days to discuss operational plans. After entering the period of the truce of the Imjin war, Japanese forces from Hanseong(漢城) to South Korea peninsula built a dwarf castle and stationed at the port and island of the southern coast of Gyeongsang-do, and Gadeok-do became the target of long-term presence by Japanese forces. The Joseon naval forces had to occupy Gadeok Island to advance to Busan, but due to the period of truce negotiations and the weakened power of the Joseon Naval Forces, Gadeok-do gradually moved away from the target of the Joseon Naval Forces. Gadeok island in the early days of the outbreak of the second Imjin war(Jeongyujaeran), served as an intermediate port of call for the Joseon naval forces to advance to Busan in order to block the large-scale movement of Japanese forces. There were several naval battles on the coast of Gadeok island in the process of participating in Busan, but due to the dwarf castle built by the Japanese, it was not possible to achieve great results. In this way, it was confirmed that Gadeok-do was recognized as a very important strategic position for both the Joseon navy and the Japanese during the Imjin Wars.
