This study aims to investigate the correlation between cohesion as the constituent of textuality and writing ability. In order to this purpose, cohesive ties analyzed in this study are conjunction, ‘이, 그, 저’ substitutes and textual particles. We also use the method of holistic scoring to evaluating writing ability. This operation is performed on descriptive writings of 5th grade student.
The result of analyzing is the following: a) conjunction, especially ‘그-’ conjunctive adverbs correlate negatively with writing competence, b) ‘이, 그, 저’ substitutes show a week correlation with writing competence, but the correlation is not significant statistically, c) the negative correlation of textual particle with writing competence is also nonsignificant statistically. Finally the correlation between cohesion as the constituent of textuality and writing ability is more significant at the level of macro-structure than the level of micro-structure.
