So-Unseong is the most important person in the second generation of Sohyeonseongrok characters. His life was not only described chronically but also developed through major events that were important turning points in his growth. So-Unseong grew up step by step undergoing such events. This study analyzes the characteristics of Sohyeonseongrok as a initiation story.
So-Unseong received the objective reward of intellectual growth, that is, winning the first place in the state examination, as a result of rejecting his father So-Hyeonseong’s way of studying. With the event of raping Soyeong, he found his sexual identity and at the same time he made it public. Such events made him reach the adulthood passing the childhood.
So-Unseong got married to Hyeong, who was in love with him, with difficulty of breaking the ordinary proprieties, but he was forced to marry the princess who showed off her power. After many twists and turns, the princess died in the end, So-Unseong had a stable marital life. However, through marriage, he experienced true frustration and hardship for the first time in his life and he came to know that the consideration of others was the foundation of mature love. By going through the event that he ridiculed his brother-in-law, Sonki, he gasped the importance of relationship. Through eradication a monster and distinguished service in war, he attained public achievement.
Undergoing a series of events, So-Unseong became a new person, who was of generosity and sociality, from a person of pride and defiance. This contrasts with the life of his father, So-Hyeonseong. He, who could not take the lead of his own life, failed to meet the poem of father that he had longed for so much. The differences between the ways of life of So-Unseong and So-Hyeonseong can be interpreted as the differences in the consciousness of the author shown in the original Sohyunsongrok and the Sohyeonseongrok.
