In the last decade, trade, industrial use and commercialization of GMOs have come to be one of the most important issues facing companies. This is attributed to inconsistency with the expectation among external stakeholders related to trade, industrial use and commercialization of GMOs, which pressures companies. Based on Carter and Gruere(2003), Kalaizandonakes and Bijman(2003) and Unnevehr et al.(2001), companies' strategic responding to those pressures is a primary factor of market access.
This paper conducts empirical test, using ANOVA, ANCOVA and MANCOVA, on the relationship between external stakeholers' pressures and market access related to GMOs. The findings of this study are as follows. First, firms falling into two of the three profiles were more sensitive to the competitive intensity within same industry than other pressures. Firms consider the other competitive firms as strategic reference in industrial use of GMOs. Second, firm's industrial use intention of GMOs correlates positively with consumers' acceptance and competitive intensity within same industry, but negatively with biosafety regulatory intensity and NGOs' monitoring.
The results of this paper hits that the most effective way to carry out the market access policy and strategy related to GMOs, in case where we can't consider all pressures related to GMOs, is to reflect the competitive intensity within same industry. However, it must always be borne in mind that government have to try to harmonize the expectation of all stakeholders related to biotech product with view to implementing market access policy.
