Alexandre de Rhodes, a French-born missionary was the one who for the first time used the Romanized writing system of Vietnamese in his Vietnamese- Portuguese-Latin Dictionary published in 1651.After the southern part of Vietnam became the French Colony in 1867,the Romanized script which was called ‘quoc ngu’ was ,at the beginning of the 20th century, adopted as the official medium of education in primary school all over Vietnam, thus gaining its popularity and universality through a campaign for the diffusion of it to acquire the full status of ‘national script’ now in general use.
In the 1960s in Korea, some languages what we call a minor foreign languages, i.e., Portuguese, Thai, Vietnamese to name a few began to be taught in the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, but without Korean-translated dictionaries concerned even up until late 1980s, when though belatedly, a government-funded project to compile dictionaries of those languages was launched for the Koreans to learn them.
At the outset of the project to compile Vietnamese-Korean Dictionary,5 years(from 1986 to 1991) were given to complete, however, it took over 13 years at long last. One of the major reasons for the delay was that ,to the compiler’s dismay, he discovered later that a large portion of the words used in South Vietnam had become useless. As Vietnam was divided into North and South for over 20 years before its reunification, the Vietnamese language had undergone a different course of development on each side, and after the reunification by force in 1975, the victorious Communist North regime began overtly dictating a forceful policy of language integration towards the shattered South, resulting, within a decade, in an outcome of a series of obsolete words which had long been in full use in the South. A great many popular vocabularies and academic terms of Southern Vietnam creation disappeared from every publications to concede to those of Northern Vietnam origination. This compelled the compiler of Vietnamese-Korean Dictionary to stop halfway the existing project, because all his efforts had been concentrated on collecting and editing headwords or corpora almost entirely from the Vietnamese-English Dictionary published in Saigon in 1967 by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hoa, who was one of Vietnam’s leading and ablest lexicographers in South Vietnam.
