This paper presents an overview of prior empirical research on dictionary use and users, particularly of English learners’ dictionaries, which has been carried out since the 1980s. Studies into dictionary use encompass several research topics which have a direct bearing on the teaching of foreign languages. The review covers the following research issues on which tentative scholarly agreement has been reached: the relationship between the dictionary and foreign language learning, the relative effectiveness of different types of dictionaries, and language learners’ dictionary using behaviours. It also deals with the issues of language testing involving dictionaries and the teachability of reference skills. Drawing upon what has been found from prior research and its educational implications, the paper calls for systematic dictionary user training and user studies within the Korean context.
