The purpose of this thesis is to study forms of being in Jae－woo, Moon-tae and Chang-eun in 1980’s and to research the process of their reconciliation by Ragetooi, the resonable form of being in this novel, form of Being. In fact, many studies just showed the figures of these characters in the novel but I tried to study how these characters play an important role one another over reconciliation.
Next, I investigated negative translation, laying more emphasis on interpretation itself than understanding under English, the language of Imperialism and afformative translation over English. And I knew that scenario translation of Jae－woo and Ragetooi contributed their joint consciousness
Lastly, I studied that capitalism tried to eat away their self－respect in Vietnam but Vietnamese overcame it, capitalism. In this novel, Vietnam people don’t strive against the theory of capitalism superficially but they make an opening through their ethos. Also the author, Pang Hyun－seok’s Vietnam is the space keeping the selfrespect from capitalism of Imperial emphasizing Modernism. Therefore Vietnam is the space of opening that is, Postcolonial space from Imperial.
Pang let the persons who had memories of 1980’s meet each other and had present be reflected by them. Also he made 1980’s of Korea and present of Vietnam be repeated and created Vietnam as the space joining past and present. As you know, Vietnam has many social problems but Vietnamese’s ideal is noble. This novel shows reality of Vietnam from Vietnam war on to now. And their social reality that is subjected to capitalism is very similar to ours.
I made an effort to research what Korea had to do for future and how Vietnam spirit was expressed in this novel. This novel helps us think over ourselves through Vietnam and helps what we must realize through Vietnam at the same time.
