Social studies is a subject matter in related with human relationship and citizenship directly. It has been changed responsively to social efficiency that is formed by contemporary paradigm of nation state and world. Global multicultural society as a recent great trend moves integrating centered uni-national culture to understanding centered multi-ethnic culture. It is a provocative circumstance about school education and its accountability. This paper is an argument on direction of social studies multicultural education in view of global multicultural society.
Social studies multicultural education has to persist in transformative citizenship in a global age. It is possible when minority becomes agents and majority changes consciously. Logic of transformative citizenship means minority group students have equal authentic opportunities for abilitable citizens through school curriculum. Transformation is to be accompanied by inclusion. Social studies aims to make democratic citizens via motto, ‘out of many, one.’ This ‘one’ is not imposed but genuine. It is a democratic nation state composed of many diverse groups like a whole mosaic made with big or small fragments. Social studies multicultural education should be oriented to transformation and inclusion in dimension of citizenship education.
