The purpose of this study is to clarify ‘Ilseondongwon-ron’ carried in ‘Dong-Won’ the journal published in 1920 as well as the main group of publication.
In publishing the journal ‘Dong-Won’, Kato Fusajo the president of The Keijo Nippo leaded publication, management, manuscripts and edition. He actively took part in assimilationism after being shocked at Koreans’ independence movement. As a part of assimilationism, he published the journal. The journal was published on purpose to refute ‘self-determination’, the motive of Koreans’ independence movement. Specifically, it was to publicize the theory that Japanese and Koreans are the same race. It was not a pure journal, but was a political one.
As aforesaid, the journal ‘Dong-Won’ was to demonstrate that Japanese and Koreans are of the same race. Some writers dealt with Siberia, Manchuria and Mongolia not to mention Japan and Korea. Also, their origin traces back to the Stone Age, the legendary age or even anno Domini. Several writers denied that Korean is a racially homogeneous nation, but evaded the question of whether Japanese and Koreans are of the same race.
Academically it failed in establishing a theory, but it stood for Korea-Japan relationship during the 1920s and the 1930s. ‘Ilseondongwon-ron’ is more reasonable, rather than ‘Ilseondongjo-ron(theory of Japan-Korea Ancestral Homogeneity)’. The Joseon Governor General office focused on the political aspect of the theory, though it considered that Koreans are different from Japanese in lineage. It planned to compile ‘Ilhandongwonsa(日韓同源史)’ in order to maintain that Koreans and Japanese were harmonious in the past. The book emphasized the interchange and friendship between two races, not homogeneity. In conclusion, the Joseon Governor General office did not diffuse ‘Ilseondongjo-ron’ after Koreans’ independence movement anymore.
